Theatre

Caesarea Maritima, Herod the Great’s seaside getaway, was remarkable. He built a theatre, amphitheater, hippodrome for chariot races and hunting shows, temple to Caesar, and his summer palace.

The city was highly Roman, hence all the Roman trappings. Herod even staged events in the hippodrome like the emperor did in the Roman Colosseum. Chariot races and staged hunts were the highlight. All this is staged to keep the people’s attention off of hated Rome.

The hunting events were for the viewing spectacle of the audience and the hunters hunted for a variety of prey, from rabbits to lions. The lions usually ended up becoming the hunters, however, with prisoners and Christians providing the prey. A lot of blood spilled in those sands.

Herod’s palace was built on the water. The palace had a swimming pool with fresh water pumped in from miles away. The pool was for refreshment and execution, where enemies were drowned, including two of his own sons.

Caesarea was the only harbor for Israel in the first century. Herod had it completely built, as there was no natural bay or any kind of inlet anywhere along the coast With shipping to Rome taking only ten days, this was a huge deal, both economically and influence-wise.

The mission to spread the Christian Way to Gentiles was launched here in Caesarea with the conversion of Cornelius and his extended family. Christianity spread quickly throughout the Empire and on to Rome itself. Paul used this as a primary launching point for various journey’s and was in prison here for two years, before he was sent to Rome. Philip the Evangelist and his disciples used this city as their base, as well.

The trip over went by without a hitch. We flew a northern route over Greenland, Iceland and Norway, then a sharp right to Tel Aviv. When we arrived at beach town, Netanya, took a quick swim in the Mediterranean, walked around for a bit (for some reason there are stray cats everywhere), ate dinner and now gone to bed so we can answer a 5:30 a.m. wake up.   After all, it was common for Jesus to get up early and pray…

N.T.Wright talks about Jesus living out the Sermon on the Mount on Good Friday. Let’s take a look…

He shined for all to see…
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. In the same way, let your light shine…

And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things…

He took the sting of shame…
But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also…

Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him…

He gave the shirt off his back…
And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well…

And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots…

He went the extra mile…
And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles…

So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull…

He loved His enemies until the end…
But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…

And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do…”

Hmmm…
