We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10 Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.
Too often we Christians compartmentalize our lives. We put our work life in this basket, our family life in this basket, our friendships in this basket, and our spiritual life in this basket.
No, life with Jesus is one basket. Life with God is just that. Life.
The finite real world is contained in the infinite spiritual world. Life with God will impact every area of our lives, if we let him in and we are receptive. We invite God into every area of our lives, especially as we work with him. And when we follow God, we do work with him, making our world a better place. We work wherever we find ourselves.
Think of it this way. You and God are working together in the way you live life. And as Paul is saying, you want to make progress working with God producing every kind of good fruit.
Good fruit in every basket which is another way of saying one basket. Fruit in all of life.
And, when we produce every kind of good fruit, we get to know God better. We grow in faith.
Yes, knowing God helps produce good fruit. And producing good fruit helps us better know God. Do you see what is happening? It’s a circle. A circle of life. Think of it this way.
When you are baptized into God’s family, you are connected to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, God’s Spirit, will begin to open the real world up to you more and more. The more you work with him, the more you are open to him, the more the Holy Spirit will give you wisdom and insight as a result. All of life is a response to being baptized into the family. All of life becomes this circle of life. Consider it this way.
I am a baptized child of God. Because God is King, I am the son of the King of the universe. God has marked me with the cross of Christ, which is a symbol that the resurrection power of Jesus, the same power that raised him from the dead, is available to me. Like Jesus, I am the prince of the King.
So, everything I do in life, if I am following God and working with him in his ways, I receive his authority. And with the authority, comes the power. Resurrection power. Power to be used to bring blessing and glory into my world.
Do you understand what I am talking about? When you are baptized into God’s holy family, you are marked by him which is sign that you are the son or daughter of the King. Because your dad is king, he is calling you to follow in his ways and to work with him, being a blessing in the world. The more you work with him being a blessing, the more need you will see, and the more blessing you will be, as more power will be available. You will see more and more of God because you will be working with him more and more. This is the life he calls you to. A circle of life.
And you are not alone. I am your brother. She is your sister. We will work with you as we work with God. When you and I join with God together we make a difference in the world. Actually even more than that, when Christian brothers and sisters of LIFEhouse, or brothers and sisters of Colossi for that matter, when we work together to be a blessing in the world we live in, we make the world different. So, it is not so much making a difference in the world, but making the world different.
Listen to words from our baptism service and think of how this all connects.
Baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. O God of mercy and eternal life, we give You thanks for freeing your sons and daughters from the power of sin and for raising them up to new life. Continue Your creation and sustain them with the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and power, the spirit of knowledge and reverence for Christ, and the spirit of joy in your presence. Amen. Child of God, you have been sealed be the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.
God has placed new brothers and sisters into our care. Receive them into your fellowship in good faith as new sisters and brothers in Christ.
We welcome you into the Lord’s family. We receive you as a partner in the Gospel and a living member of the Body of Christ. We receive you as a child of God and worker with us in the task of proclaiming the Good News of Jesus.
Or consider the words of God at the baptism of Jesus. The sky rips apart, the heavens are opened the light of the Holy Spirit shines on Jesus like a shining dove, and out of this light comes the voice of God. This is my beloved son, I adore him!
It’s all right there. The Circle of life. Now do you get it? Baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. marked by the cross of Christ to join him in serving with our King, our Father, and bring his rule of love, joy, and peace into his world. Joining together all of us as brothers and sisters and bringing the fruit of God’s rule, bringing our Father’s reign to the whole world. Did you get how amazing this is?
